Celebrate Life with Exercise
- by Susan Smith Jones, M.S., Ph.D. -

Patterns of modern living have channeled the average American into increasingly sedentary existence. We human beings, however, were designed and built for movement, and our bodies have not adapted well to this reduced level of activity.

For many adults with sedentary occupations, physical activity provides an outlet for job-related tensions or mental fatigue. In addition to reducing tension in the body, studies disclose that exercise can boost spirits and help us feel good about ourselves. When we stick with our exercise program, we have a more positive attitude about ourselves and life. Exercise aids in weight control, and, increases energy. Proper exercise can often prevent or correct lower back pain and improve posture. Research also indicates that much of the degeneration of bodily function and structure associated with premature aging seems to be reduced by a program of vigorous, regular exercise.

Regular exercise is necessary then to develop and maintain not only an optimal level of health, but also a youthful appearance, mental clarity and high energy. Regular exercise increases muscle strength and endurance. It enhances the function of the lungs, heart and blood vessels; increases the flexibility of the joints; and improves coordination and efficiency of movement.

But before you can experience any of the benefits of vigorous exercise, you must take responsibility for your own fitness program. Keep in mind the following points:

  1. Exercise must be consistent, at least 3 times a week.
  2. Select exercises and activities you find enjoyable and cross-train (include 3 or 4 activities during the week)
  3. Train, don't strain when working out
  4. Reward yourself when you achieve your fitness goals
  5. Don't give up

Practice self discipline - the ability to carry our your fitness resolution
long after the mood has left you.
When you stay disciplined, you will see the salutary benefits sooner.
For a disciplined healthy body creates a healthy positive mind and spirit.
